Quick troubleshooting

The system permission on first recording

Since macOS 14.2, capturing system audio is a standalone permission. The first time you hit record, macOS shows "AuralTap wants to capture system audio" once — allow it. If you previously clicked "Don't Allow", re-enable AuralTap manually under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Screen & System Audio Recording.

Recording is empty / no sound

Check two things: the target app is actually making sound right now (it shows a green dot in the list), and the permission toggle is on. If you just enabled the toggle in System Settings, quit AuralTap completely and reopen it.

Where recordings are saved

In the folder you chose inside the app, as WAV files. Every finished recording can be revealed in Finder with one click from the app.

Support · Frequently asked questions

Do I need to install a driver or a virtual sound card?

No. AuralTap uses the audio interface macOS already provides — no kernel extensions, no virtual devices, no changes to your system output routing.

Can I record just one app's audio?

That's exactly what it's built for. Select the app from the list of running apps and only its output gets recorded; apps currently making sound show a green dot.

While recording a meeting, will system sounds leak into the file?

No. Per-app mode captures only that app's own sound. System alerts and other apps stay out. Want everything? Switch to "whole system".

Can I record multiple apps at the same time?

Yes. Select several apps, then either mix them into one file or give each app its own WAV, with independent start and stop per track.

What format is the output? Can I get MP3?

Output is lossless 48 kHz stereo WAV; the app doesn't do lossy conversion. For MP3 / M4A, run one conversion in any converter — your source WAV always stays intact.

Which macOS versions are supported?

macOS 14.2 and later, on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Are my recordings uploaded anywhere?

No. Recordings are written only to the local folder you chose and never leave your Mac. The app has no third-party SDKs, no accounts and no analytics. The only network request happens after a successful purchase: an order ID, sent to reconcile the order, with no recording content.

I granted permission but still can't record — why?

The most common cause: the app hasn't been restarted since granting. Confirm the toggle is on under System Settings → Privacy & Security, then quit AuralTap completely and reopen it.

Will recordings over 4 GB break?

No. Past 4 GB the file automatically switches to the BW64 container format; the extension stays .wav and all major DAWs read it directly.
